Crestview FFA Holds Annual Chicken BBQ

On Friday, September 16th, the Crestview FFA chapter held their annual chicken barbecue fundraiser. Community members from all around gathered in the high school commons to enjoy the meal prepared and served by chapter students and alumni members.  Individuals from every grade level worked together during the week to arrange for the Friday evening meal. They were responsible for cleaning equipment, baking and wrapping brownies and potatoes, and also grilling the chicken throughout the school day. With sales of over $7,000, the fundraiser enables the chapter to participate in many activities throughout the school year. Also, the event is always a great way to acclimate new members into the FFA as well as give back to their supportive community.

Crestview FFA Holds Annual Summer Picnic

On Thursday, July 28th, the Crestview FFA held their annual summer picnic at Crestview High School. This event gave incoming freshman enrolled in an agriscience class the opportunity to meet fellow members and become acquainted with everything the chapter has to offer. Over sixty current and incoming members, as well as parents, attended the potluck dinner and informational meeting held by the chapter's advisor, Mr. Joel Albright. The Crestview FFA officer team organized and led water games after the meal to get new members involved and comfortable. The games included a water balloon fight, obstacle course, and a slip and slide. Beneficial to new members, the summer picnic is a tradition that will always be a chapter favorite.

Crestview FFA Travels to State Convention

This year, 28 members of the Crestview FFA traveled to Columbus on Thursday, May 5th and Friday, May 6th to attend the 88th annual FFA State Convention at the Ohio State Fairgrounds. On the way to Columbus, the group stopped at Sunrise Cooperative-Crestline for a facility tour. Led by the site manager, Steve Niese, members were able to see the entire on-site process first hand. Members gained a better understanding of all the hard work and preparation that goes into helping farmers on the road to maximized yields in the fall. During the first session of State Convention, the chapter received a Chapter Trust award and was also recognized for raising money to donate toward the Children’s Hospital.  After first session, the group was given a personal tour of the Ohio State University Ag campus by Crestview FFA alumni, Abby Motter.  Abby attends OSU with an intended major in agriculture education. After touring the campus, the group returned to the grounds to watch second session, which included proficiency award recognition and a touching presentation by keynote speaker, Dave Roever. The following day during the third session, Crestview was awarded with the gold medal chapter award. Following awards, keynote speaker Jones Loflin delivered his message to the convention hall of over 7000 FFA members and guests.  During fourth session, 2015-2016 Crestview officers were awarded for their gold rated officer books. These officers included Kathy Lehman for her Treasurer’s book and Emma Ardis for her Reporter’s book. During the fifth and final session of the 88th Annual State Convention, chapter junior, Dawson LaFever, was awarded his state degree.

Food For America Press Release

On Wednesday, May 11th, the Crestview FFA held their annual Food For America educational workshop day. On this day, Crestview’s third grade class was welcomed by numerous FFA members for a morning of flower planting, agricultural word searches, interactive games, tractor and welding demonstrations, and a petting zoo. 88 elementary kids were led in groups, rotating around between the six stations. Food For America is used to not only expose younger generations to the benefits of  being involved in FFA, but also for current members to gain and improve on their leadership skills. Station leaders were given the responsibility of creating a lesson plan that was both fun and educational to fill each 15 minute session. The third graders learned about the opportunities available with the Crestview FFA Livestock Lab as well as plant a flower from the chapters greenhouse to take home. They then had the opportunity to learn about student brought tractors, including both a John Deere 7310 and 9300. Inside the shop, students got to watch as members enrolled in the Power Equipment class demonstrated their welding skills. Finally, in the chapters classroom, station leaders led the third graders in a word find, coloring, and agricultural pictionary. The day was rewarding and educational for both younger students and the current FFA members.
